Different Types of HVAC Systems

What energy efficiency in HVAC terms should I know when considering a new HVAC system?

HVAC

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are all represented by the acronym HVAC. By guaranteeing the appropriate control of temperature, humidity, and air quality, these systems are crucial for regulating the environmental comfort of buildings. They are essential in residential and commercial settings because they effectively regulate temperature and filter air, giving residents a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. 1. SEER

That means cooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps. This higher SEER rating means the system requires less energy to provide the same cooling. Optimum efficiency systems 14 or more SEER rating.

  1. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)

AFUE measures how efficiently furnaces and boilers work. More specifically, it shows the percentage of fuel converted into usable heat in a year. As a result, higher ratings (generally, 90% and above) depict systems being more efficient and wasting energy less.

  1. EER

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. It refers to the capacity of an air conditioner to provide cooling at a given temperature and is defined as the ratio of its cooling capacity in BTUs to the power input in watts. A higher value of EER indicates better efficiency.

  1. HSPF

HSPF, on the other hand, measures efficiency in heat pumps during the heating season; like SEER, a higher value denotes better efficiency and thus lower consumption of energy.

  1. BTU

BTU means British Thermal Unit, which tells how large a heat energy must be supplied to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Therefore, BTU is used to quantify heating and cooling capacity in HVAC systems.

These HVAC systems tend to be certified by Energy Star as they meet energy efficiency guidelines set forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As such, it is believed that if a person buys an Energy Star HVAC system, they will be guaranteed lower energy consumption and utility bills.

Components that make up an HVAC System

Thermostat

The control unit of the entire HVAC system is available, wherein the user can set the desired temperature, and the system then instructs the HVAC to heat or cool accordingly.

Furnace

The furnace is to heat across the air which the furnace attaches a heat exchanger inside of which heat is then conducted throughout the building via ducting.

Heat Exchanger

An important part of the furnace is the heat exchanger, which is used for transferring heat to the air without mixing combustion gases with indoor air that is produced during combustion or electric resistance.

And other components include an evaporator coil, condenser coil, compressor, ductwork, air handler, blower fan, refrigerant, etc..,.

Codes and Standards of HVAC

HVAC codes and standards ensure safety, reliability, and energy efficiency in HVAC systems. Restricted codes include ASHRAE 90.1, ICC IECC, NFPA 70, and UMC. These standards guide the design, installation, maintenance, and inspection of HVAC systems, ensuring optimal performance and safety throughout their lifetime.
