  1. SEER

  1. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)

AFUE measures how efficiently furnaces and boilers work. More specifically, it shows the percentage of fuel converted into usable heat in a year. As a result, higher ratings (generally, 90% and above) depict systems being more efficient and wasting energy less.

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. It refers to the capacity of an air conditioner to provide cooling at a given temperature and is defined as the ratio of its cooling capacity in BTUs to the power input in watts. A higher value of EER indicates better efficiency.

HSPF, on the other hand, measures efficiency in heat pumps during the heating season; like SEER, a higher value denotes better efficiency and thus lower consumption of energy.

BTU means British Thermal Unit, which tells how large a heat energy must be supplied to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Therefore, BTU is used to quantify heating and cooling capacity in HVAC systems.

 

These HVAC systems tend to be certified by Energy Star as they meet energy efficiency guidelines set forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As such, it is believed that if a person buys an Energy Star HVAC system, they will be guaranteed lower energy consumption and utility bills.
